By the early 20th century, infantry weapons became more powerful and accurate. Cannon proved highly effective during World War I, causing over 75% of casualties. World War I also marked the use of the Paris Gun, the longest-ranged gun ever fired.The Second World War sparked new developments in cannon technology. Among them were sabot rounds, hollow-charge projectiles, and proximity fuses. They became known as the American artillery's "Christmas present" for the German army, and were employed primarily in the Battle of the Bulge. After the invention of the Paris gun that was basically the basis for the artillery in every war afterwards. There was also still the use of hotwitzers and mortars just not as frequently.
