1700-Cannon
During the 1700's cannons were used to protect armys from attacks of enemies. During the American Revolutionary war. the word artillery, was also referred to the word cannon because cannons were the only projectile throwing device in use at this time. English field artillery of the day had "brigades" of four to six cannons and each piece was supplied with 100 rounds of solid shot and almost 30 rounds of grape which is ammo.
There were 3 types of cannons used during the American Revolutionary War: Guns, Mortars and Hotwitzers. All of these were considered smoothbore becuase the inside of the cannons barrel was not rifled. Rifling was the cutting of spiral grooves along the length of the barrel's bore, which imparted a spin on the projectile.
Guns shot at a low trajectory and could be used at either long or short range shooting.
Mortar shot at high trajectory and because of that they could be used to be shot out of canons.
